Kano And Hisbah Police.

It is well stated in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution that there shall only be one Police force called the Nigerian Police Force. But it seems Kano State is operating another Constitution in this country. The country has always feigned ignorance of the operation of Shariah Police in Kano hence their activities and operation keep expanding. From destroying crates of alcohol to arresting those who eat in public during Ramadan Fast. Ultimately, it will get to enforcing hijab on every woman walking on the street of Kano. The Nigerian constitution states unequivocally that citizens have rights to freedom of religion, conscience and thoughts. Does it now mean that the Shariah law supersedes the Nigerian Constitution? And what about Christians and atheists or people of other faiths who eat in public, are they free from Hisbah arrest? Even a Muslim who chose not to fast should be left alone. Everything must not be by coercion, the decision to fast should be of freewill and coming from the heart. The other question should be why has the Nigerian Police not acted to stop the operations of Hisbah Police in Kano? We all can remember the tussle and harassment of Peace Corp members by the Nigerian Police. There’s no doubt that there are two constitutionsin Nigeria, one for the North and one for the South: Religious Constitution for the North, Civil Constitution for the South.
